Hackers are using a malware called "Mirai malware" to hack home and office appliances with weak security. They were then used basically used in a botnet to Brian Krebs shutting down his website used to expose cyber crimes. Your coffee machine could be part of a large scale DDoS attack. People are advised to change their appliance's passwords to make harder to infect with the virus. Lots of information many political campaign including the presidential race have been victims of such attacks.
