Using shadow copies can help if your users accidentally delete a file or want to go back to a previous version of that file (don't like their new changes they made) 

This article does a good job of explaining what they are.  Also in your book it talks about a shadow copies "tab" - ignore that and right click on the volume and "configure shadow copies" option from the dialog box.
