Have you ever wondered what all the port numbers are?  Maybe not...  There are 65,535 total.  

The "well known port numbers" are listed in the link below.  Any service that is online needs a port number. 

HTTP uses port 80
HTTPS uses 443

Your favorite game server might use a number like 25565 which is not a well known number

IP addresses plus a port number create what is called a socket.  This is important for setting up a router to use port forwarding so that the outside world can see your server behind the firewall.
