Just as a reminder, I will not be here on March 4th.  You have until the 5th to find a really good article and summarize it.

This article goes over some of the best open source tools for scheduling and organizing your time. This article is more for people who use Linux at home full time, but it's still cool to check out if you don't. The article includes 5 of these apps, each with a pretty good description of the app itself. https://www.linuxinsider.com/story/Top-Open-Source-Tools-for-Staying-on-Time-and-on-Task-85779.html

LibreElec is a opensource Cross-plateform media software. It adds many new features and enhancements, like retro gaming support, DRM support for streaming content.
It also got a Maintenance Update which improves better hardware support, and overhauls the underlying OS core to improve stability.

A new cyber-criminal group that is believed to operate out of China has been hacking into Linux servers since last fall and installing a new strain of malware that mines cryptocurrency.  Experts say Pacha Group hackers use brute-force attacks to compromise services like WordPress or PhpMyAdmin.  This is a complex piece of code that is designed to work with multiple command and control servers.

Re: Article #8 - Due March 5th - no class March 4th

A group referred to as Pacha Group hackers, which are based out of china, are gaining access to Linux servers by targeting applications that run on Linux. By gaining access to these servers they can plant Crpto-mining malware that mines bitcoin in the background without users knowing. These criminals use brute force attacks to target services like Wordpress or PhypMyAdmin. After they compromise these services they are able to gain access to the actual server, at which point malware can be hidden in the system and eventually deployed without the user of that machines knowledge. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is keep your applications up to date and to make sure applications that require passwords are not easy to guess.

A new security vulnerability in chrome was confirmed on February 14th. When you open certain PDF documents in chrome can trigger some malicious code to send IP address of the device, the operating system and Google Chrome versions, as well as the path of the PDF file on the local drives to two different domains. The malicious documents are not detected by as malicious by some security products. It does not appear to leak any information when the document is opened in a PDF reader like Adobe. The fix will be released in April.

Linux is becoming more and more popular among Windows users, yet its website continues to look very outdated. Linux announced last month that it is working on a new website in hopes of modernizing the brand. In addition to modernizing their website Linux has also confirm that they are working on a new Logo. the company is working on a round logo that will scale down better when it’s needed to act as a favicon or an item on a menu. Linux developers are also working on developments for Cinnamon, allowing the application menu applets to load twice as fast a before. Mint tools will also get new improvements

This article is on “The history of Linux”. Who would have known that an IT student that did not have any plans on starting an operating system? He just wanted to explore the capabilities of his PC’s 386 processor. That is what Linus Torvalds did. It isn’t that he did it by himself no. However, he created a vision when he put out Linux 0.01 it is not that you could do any thing in it, but it did touch a creative nerve in those using Unix.  They started giving Torvalds ideas of what they would like to see. This is a big article, so I hope you read it and enjoy.
