Re: Article #8 - Due March 5th - no class March 4th

Systemback is a tool that works on Ubuntu derived systems. It allows users to backup, restore, copy, install, and my favorite feature- allows you to make your currently installed Ubuntu into a bootable ISO that is ready to be redistributed to other PC's with all of your custom settings intact. The only limitation is that the resulting file has to be below 4 gigs in order to convert to an ISO.

Re: Article #8 - Due March 5th - no class March 4th

The article that I found this week goes over some basics of the Linux kernel and what it is and does.  The Linux kernel is a monolithic computer operating system that resembles the UNIX system. A monolithic kernel system is a system where all services, as well as core functionality, are in a tight-knit group sharing the same space.

My article discuses a Linux OS that can turn an out of date computer into a retro-gaming machine. Lakka uses software called retroarche to bring a seamless gui that feels like a general gaming console. The main selling point of this OS is ts very lightweight operating system, fitting onto Raspberry Pis and several other single board devices. It supports a crazy amount of emulators, so  you just need to download the ROMs. it also has some simple but interesting features like up to 5 player split screen, and graphical improvements! This could be really fun OS to try out on the club's Raspberry Pis!

"8 Deadly Commands You Should Never Run On Linux"

This article highlights a few commands that damage or erase data on the hard drive.

The first 3 items on the list include some we have seen before, like the rm -rf/ command, and a disguised hex version of the rm -rf/ command, and the Fork Bomb command. The next 5 commands listed were new to me. One formats a hard drive, another writes directly to a hard drive, and the 7th command listed writes junk onto a hard drive. The final command listed moves your home directory to a "black hole", so to speak.

The other "deadly" commands

Charles Barrett, Linux commands can be a little hard to remember, so I have a little list of 50 short commands that are very easy to remember.  https://www.ubuntupit.com/the-50-best-linux-commands-to-run-in-the-terminal/

https://www.linuxinsider.com/story/B0r0nt0K-Ransomware-Threatens-Linux-Servers-85870.html

B0r0nt0K is a new cryptovirus that targets Linux and possibly Windows Web servers. The virus seems to attack the domain files by encrypting them. Based on a forum from "Bleeping Computers", a client's website was the target of an attack and had all files encrypted and replaced with the extension .rontok attached to each file.

Re: Article #8 - Due March 5th - no class March 4th

Almost exactly one year ago, Samsung announced it was working on an app called Linux on DeX (DeX is that gimmicky app/dock combo that got mediocre reviews). This was supposed to allow users to run Linux distros on their phone, which would seem to create a more PC-like experience — at least in theory. https://www.techspot.com/news/77345-samsung-linux-dex-app-enters-private-beta.html
