Reputable encrypted email "Proton Mail" goes open source on it's iOS app.

I like this because they would rather have "a thousand eyes looking for vulnerabilities than a dozen"

They prioritized iOS over Android right now because they had received threat intelligence about a Chinese malware targeting Activists using iOS.

Seattle-based angel investor Gregg Bennett is suing Bittrex, a crytpocurrency exchange, for allegedly violating its own security standards, allowing hackers to steal 100 Bitcoin using a SIM-swap back in April 2019.

Bennet also says he thinks staff at At&T were involved, since his account PIN and SSN had been changed.

Not much to this one, but I found it interesting that these were some of the high profile hackers arrested in 2017 https://www.cloudbric.com/blog/2017/07/top-10-hackers-arrested-2017/

Government raises threat level on undetectable email virus. The banking trojan, known as Emotet, can also go undetected by antivirus software and can forward itself to every email contact of a victim, increasing the likelihood of further infection. As the emails are sent from hijacked email accounts, the recipients may feel safe to click on any links or documents as they appear to have come from a trusted contact. When the email is opened, it attaches itself to the server and is able to see access the victims system.

Georgia was under a cyber attack in October 28, 2019. This was the biggest attack on Georgia's history, with the after math of defacing over 15,000 websites where attackers replace the website's original content with their own content. This attack had similarities to 2008 Russian cyber attacks.

Re: Security Class Article #5 Due November 4th

Facing up to five years in prison, two men have pleaded guilty to hacking Uber and Lynda.com's database and holding the info for ransom. The Uber breach impacted 57 million customers and drivers, located worldwide, while the breach of Lynda.com, (an online learning platform subsidiary of LinkedIn), affected 90,000 customer accounts. In both cases, the defendants in the case attempted to extort a payment from the companies. Uber agreed to pay the hackers $100,000 and originally kept the incident quiet, while Lynda decided to publicly disclose the breach. In Nov 2017, under new leadership, Uber fessed up to the cover-up and took a $148 million fine in Sep 2018 from the FTC.

Re: Security Class Article #5 Due November 4th

A rarity in the tech world, a Linux Virus, "a spyware that is currently fully undetected across all major antivirus software". Linux is such a virus clear area due to the fact that Linux had a lot of security in mind when initially being created (think "root" user), as well as there are much more Windows users than Linux user's so viruses tend to be aimed more for Windows in most cases. this new Spyware is being dubbed "EvilGnome", and would actually mask itself as a legitimate GNOME extension, and would deploy on victims computers with a self-extracting shell script.
