Re: Article #3 Due Friday! January 31st...

On this changelog page https://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_5.5 we learn about the new Linux 5.5 release. There's a literal wall of text to sift through, but some of the most useful and interesting features are listed at the top. Things like Btrfs raid1 with 3- and 4- copies, Wi-Fi airtime queue limits, and seemingly the most interesting one being SMB rootfs with multichannel support. What this does is allow SMB to be used as the root file system, and also supports use of multiple network connections for the same SMB session. There's tons of other information on the page, so go check it out.

This article is about being aware of the emerging threats that are to be expected in the future on a Linux machine.  The possibility that no one is really looking for them since they usually relate most viruses to Windows.  The problem is going to be lack of detection and reporting of cases, and how the Cloud will affect possible threats.

Re: Article #3 Due Friday! January 31st...

Since Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7, Ubuntu invites less tech-savvy users onto Linux with helpful tutorials on how to install Linux. Arguing that Ubuntu is secure and safe all around with most apps used in Windows would be already supported. The company behind Ubuntu tweeted out "One reason why you should switch to Ubuntu? It brings the security that you and your company need." Windows' current market share is 77% and out of those, 26% are Windows 7 users. Some of those users may hate Windows 10 or are afraid of changing what operating system they are already used to. Luckily Ubuntu welcomes Windows 7 users to try Linux.

This article discusses the addition of WireGuard in Torvalds Linux 5.6 kernel release. The article also discusses the benefits of WireGuard over OpenVPN, claiming that it is simpler to configure/deploy and easier to audit for security issues.

Re: Article #3 Due Friday! January 31st...

This article discusses Apache and NGINX. Apache powers 47% of all websites. However, as a site's traffic volume goes up, Apache's popularity in usage goes down due to low benchmarks for high traffic sites. NGINX can handle high traffic more so than Apache and is therefore much more popular among the top 1000 most popular sites at 57% (compared to Apache's 16.2%). It also describes some of Apache's common features, such as .htaccess, PHP, load balancing, etc.

I also found another short article about NGINX and an interesting stat I read there was that NGINX surpassed Microsoft's share of domains/web servers in late 2018.

This article details a way to reset a Windows password using the chntpw utility in Linux. The SAM database is edited to either delete or reset your password.
