Re: Articles for Monday the 24th

Anonymous and Lulzsec's most notorious hacker Hector "Sabu" Monsegur is back in the news. Now he is putting to the test whether or not a black hat hacker can go legit. He is currently working for a security company in Seattle performing penetration tests for paying clients. I thought this article was pretty good.

"Nation-State Hackers Hit Japanese Nuclear Facility"

A Japanese nuclear research facility was hacked 59,000 files were stolen. The infiltrators stole the lab's tritium research, along with the personal details of 1,493 researchers.  The malware that was used in the breach was delivered via a spear-phishing. The malware samples that were analyzed were programmed to search for the term IAEA. The acronym for the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency.

On Friday the 21st, hundreds of websites, including Netflix, Twitter and Spotify were DDoS attacked cutting off access to users on the East Coast and other places across the US. While the attacks were large, and used a considerable amount of bandwidth, they thankfully didn't bring anything down for too long.

Ransomware authors constantly upping their game, techniques, to stay ahead of security researchers. This article talks about the locky virus and the brute force remote desktop protocol attacks that are taking place in the netherlands. Studies are showing that April has been the worst month in history for ransomeware attacks.

"US vigilante hacker, 'The Jester,' defaces Russian government website"

In what he describes as a warning to the Russian government to stop attempting to influence the US presidential election, a self-styled patriotic American hacker known as 'The Jester' has defaced the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

That first bout was resolved after about two hours; a second attack began just before noon. Dyn reported a third wave of attacks a little after 4 pm ET. i had no idea this even happened ha!
