Alternate Access Mappings (AAM) in SharePoint 2013

Once you have SharePoint 2013 installed, you may notice that while your sharepoint site loads okay for you, when other people try to connect they get a "401 Unauthorized" Error.

Setting up an 'Alternate Access Mapping' will take care of that. Here are the steps to set up an AAM to allow other users to connect to your SharePoint site. In this example, my IP address is 134.39.158.69, and I have a Host (A) record on the DNS server that points bebop.cts to my IP.

1 - Open the start menu, and open up 'SharePoint Central Administration'.

2 - Enter your username and password when prompted, and be patient waiting for the Central Administration page to load.

3 - Click on 'Application Management'

4 - Click on 'Configure alternate access mappings.'

5 - Click on/highlight the entry that is just the name of your PC (In my case "http://t69web")

6 - Click "Edit Public URLs" just a little bit further up the page

7 - You should see "http://YOURSERVERNAME" in the default field. If you don't, click the link to select an alternate access mapping collection, then select SharePoint - 80.

8 - Add your DNS entry to the field that says "Internet." In my case, http://bebop.cts (the http:// is required). If you don't have a Host (A) record on the DNS server, you can just punch in your IP Address here instead. (in my case, http://134.39.158.69).

9 - People should now be able to get past that 401 Unauthorized when trying to connect to your page, as long as they use whatever address you previously specified. They'll still need an account to log in with, since we aren't using domain authentication.
