Uber Technologies Inc. paid hackers $ 100,000 ransom to keep secret a massive data breach that happened a year ago (in October 2016) . The breach exposed the personal information for about 57 million accounts. When the cover-up of the incident was discovered, 2 employees (who were responsible for the cover-up) were fired.
The information that was stolen included names, email addresses, and mobile phone numbers of Uber clients, as well as the names and license numbers of Uber drivers. Uber says there has been no evidence of fraud, but the drivers whose driver license numbers were stolen will be offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.
